Characters

Cassie Logan
  • Easily bored.
  • She gets distracted very easily.
  • When Miss Crocker was addressing the students, she "already bored, stretched [her] right arm on the desk and rested [her] head in [her] upraised hand".
  • Therefore, she gets bored out easily.
  • Rebellious.
  • She follows her own thinking unlike other students.
  • When Miss Crocker asked "whether are [the students] willing to""work like little Christian boys and girls and share, share, share", Cassie "remained silent" despite the fact that everybody else answered Miss Crocker.
  • Therefore, she is quite rebellious and did not respond as she "never did approve of group responses".
  • Righteous and understanding especially towards her siblings.
  • When Little Man was almost being punished by Miss Crocker for "flinging the book" given to him "onto the floor" and "stomping madly upon it", she intervened and and wanted to "tell [Miss Crocker] how come Little Man done what he done".
  • Thus, she is righteous, understanding and stands up for what's right based mostly on her actions.
  • Loyal
  • After the night when Cassie got to know about the night riders, she got troubled and depressed.
  • When Mama asked her whether "is there something [Cassie] want to tell [her]?", she "remembered the pact Stacey made [them] all swear to" and said "'no, ma'am" despite being "on the verge of blurting out the awful truth about the bus and the men in the night".
  • Thus, this shows that she is loyal as she does not blurt out the truth even to her dearest kin, her mother, after making a pact with her brother.
  • Bold/Daring
  • She dares to go against the Miss Crocker
  • "'Sit down!' [Miz Crocker] ordered as I hurried toward her with the open book in my hand"
  • "I turned back around. 'Miz Crocker,' I said, 'I don't want my book neither."
  • Thus, this shows that she is a bold person to dare to against a teacher despite knowing that she might get "part of [the] switch" that Little Man would get for defying a teacher's order and being rude to a teacher.
  • She isn't afraid of showing her personality in front of strangers. Especially when she is angry and her opinions were not said out.
  • When Cassie talked back to the white, Mr Barnett, Mr Barnett was very furious and "bellowed" "Whose little nigger is this!" and spat with "hateful force" to Stacey "you get her out of here" and "make sure she don't come back till yo' mammy teach her what she is". Cassie was angered and "retaliated" "I already kow what I am!... But I betcha you don't know what you are! And I could cure tell you too, you ole-"
  • From this, we can see that she is bold to dare to go against a stranger, a white some more. Evan after getting bellowed at, she still dares to shout and scream back at an adult.
  • Cautious
  • She know Big Ma well in a sly, childlike way.
  • "knowing that [Big Ma] would be suspicious of such an early surrender to sleep, [Cassie] sighed softly and, making sleepy little sounds, turned onto [her] stomach, careful not to expose [her] shirt sleeves"
  • She is cautious in her actions especially how she acts towards her family members. Based on how she acted to show Big Ma that she was almost falling into a deep sleep, we can thus see that she is cautious and knows Big Ma well.
  • Observant
  • She knows very well her mama's personality and when her mama is angry.
  • When she talked back to mama, mama got angry and snapped back at her. Then, Cassie just "said softly" ''Yes'm". "Deciding that it was better to study the patchwork pattern on teh quilt until the ange left Mama's eyes and [she] could talk to her again."
  • Therefore, from this evidence, I see that she is observant as she understands her Mama and knows when to do things to avoid getting herself into trouble.
  •  Prideful.
  • She cares about her pride. Especially when she is forced to do something against her will.
  • When Stacey told Cassie that she should not blame Big Ma "for what she done", Cassie replied "angrily", "'Why not?... She made my apologize to that ole Lillian Jean 'bout something wasn't even my fault. She took them ole Simmses' side without even hearing mine.'"
  • Therefore, from here, I can see that she is prideful and she hates being asked to do something against her will and pride. Especially apologizing for something she has not done wrong.
  • Hot tempered
  • She gets mad easily.
  • When Stacey told her that maybe Big Ma done "what she done" as "maybe she couldn't help it". That "maybe she had to do it", Cassie "practically screamed" "She didn't have to do nothin'! She's grown just like that Mr Simms and she should've stood up for me. I wouldn't've done her that way."
  • Therefore, we can see that she is hot-tempered as she gets angry really easily and would hate it when she doesn't get her way and her pride is hurt.
Stacey Logan

  • Protective
  • He cares about her siblings feelings and is protective of them when T.J bullied Little Man.
  • "Stacey, his face burning red beneath his dark skin, glared so fiercely at T.J that he fell back. 'Just one word outa you, T.J.,' he said tightly. 'Just one word'."
  • Thus, we can see that he is a very protective brother. He cares about Little Man especially after Little Man was "totally dismayed by what had happened? and "buried his face in his hands and cried".
  • Responsible
  • He holds himself responsible for the mistakes that he and his siblings made together despite it not being his fault at all.
  • "He collapsed in silence by the door, breathing hard, and although I could not see him, I knew that his face was drawn and that his eyes had taken on a haggard look. I touched his arm lightly. 'Ain't no call to go blaming yourself,' I said. 'We all done it.'" "'But I got us into it,' he said listlessly,"
  • Thus, from the words "but i got us into it", we can see that he is a responsible person as he blames himself and only himself for the mistakes that he and his siblings made together.
  • Mature
  • He thinks more in depth and more like an adult unlike his other siblings.
  • After Stacey beat up T.J, Mr Morrison lectured him and "[left] it up to [Stacey] to tell [Mama]". Stacey "nodded thoughtfully" and decided to "tell [Mama]" about the incident despite the fact that he might get whipped for confessing about the mistake he made for "[hitting T.J] squarely in the face at a white's store.
  • Thus, I find him mature as he will not cower up like a childish coward but face up to the music and deserves what he should get and tell the truth.
  • Self-conscious
  • He is conscious about his looks and how he is seen in front of his friends.
  • He "gave [the coat] to T.J" when T.J said that "the coat was too big for [him] and T.J said it made [him] look like a preacher and he said since it fit him just right, he'd take it off [Stacey's] hands till [Stacey] grows into it, then thataway all the guys would stop laughing at [Stacey] and calling [Stacey] preacher".
  • He cares about his image very much and doesn't want anybody calling him names. He rather listen to T.J's sly words than keep the coat that even "David and and [Mama] can't afford".

Mama or Mary Logan
  • Daring
  • She dares to defy orders despite it concerning the whites.
  • "Biting the hand that feeds you. Thats what you're doing. Mary Logan, biting the hand that feeds you". Instead of cowering in fear, " Mama laughed. 'If that's the case, Daisy, I don't think I need that little bit of food.'"
  • Therefore, from this incident, we can see that Mary is a daring person as she dares to vandalize the books that the whites gave to the "nigra" despite knowing that she has to face the music sooner or later. However, what she replies to that possibility is "It will be easy enough for anyone to see whose responsibility it is, Daisy, by opening any seventh-grade book. Because tomorrow, I'm going to "mess them up" too."
  • Inquisitive and fast-thinking
  • She knew that something was not right just by the fact that Papa would not come back home unless if something was wrong.
  • "'David; is something the matter?' [Mama] asked... 'You got my letter?'"
  • Thus, from this, we can see that she is fast thinking and reacts quickly to any situation.
  • Caring but firm
  • She is resolute in her decisions and would not want her children to disobey her.
  • "Mama issued [her children] dried calf skins which [they] flung over [their] heads and shoulders like stiff cloaks", "Mama cares very little about what [they] preferred".
  • Thus, from this, we can see that she is caring by wanting them to wear the "calf skins" so that they would not be soaked by the rain. However, she is firm by the fact that she wants her children to listen to her words and does not bother about their opinions.
  • Positive-thinking
  • She thinks positively and encourages her child when they are down.
  • For example, when Stacey Knew about the night riders coming in Chapter three, he insisted on helping Mama out of his sense of responsibility, "Mama... Let me help...with...with whatever's the matter". However, Mama's reply was, "And you do, more than you know".
  • Thus, she is positive-thinking as despite scolding and bring Stacey's mood down and shouting at him for being such a nuisance, she encouraged him lovingly that he is doing more than enough.
Uncle Hammer or Hammer Logan

  • Cheeky
  • He dares to play around with the whites.
  • "Uncle Hammer smiled a strange, wry smile. 'Well, not exactly like it, Mama. Mine's a few months newer. Last year when I comedown here, I was right impressed with that big ole Packard of Mr Harlan Filmore Granger's and I thought I'd like to own one myslef. It semms that me and Harlen Granger just got the same taste.'"
  • He dares to spite the whites and even "got a car like Harlen Granger's". Thus showing the cheekiness side of him.
  • Fearless
  • He is bold in his actions and is not afraid to taunt the whites despite knowing that "one day [they'll] pay".
  • He boldly made the passing "wallaces, all three of them - Dewberry, Thurston, and Kaleb - touch their hats respectfully, then immediately freeze as they saw who [they] were. Uncle Hammer, straight-face and totally calm, touched the brim of his own hat in polite response and without a backward glance sped away, leaving the wallaces gaping silently after [them]".
  • Thus, we can see that he is fearless in his actions. Especially when even after Mama "said quietly" "You shouldn't have done that, Hammer," Hammer resp"the opportunity, dear sister, was too much to resist".
  • Rash
  • He tends to act without thinking and consideration of the consequences he would have to face.
  • He would "rather burn [the berrys] out [himself]" even if [they'll] have nothing".
  • Therefore, from this, Uncle Hammer can be seen as a rash person.
  • Caring
  • He values his family and is not selfish when it comes to his family.
  • When the Logans were in trouble with their debts, Hammer Logan "sold" "[his] car" and told Papa "what good's a car? It can't grow cotton. You can't build a home on it. And you can't raise four fine babies in it".
  • Therefore, we can see that he actually does care about his family even to the extent that he would sell of his beloved car to help his family.
